Allen advocates setting realistic, clear key performance indicators (KPIs) to build trust and help employees succeed in a recent Forbes Human Resources Council article, “19 Ways Middle Managers Can Improve Relationships With Their Teams.”

“Middle managers should set realistic KPIs, clearly communicate those to their direct reports, and then meet with them regularly to review their progress and provide helpful feedback,” says Allen. “People want to know what is important and how they can best do their job. They want a manager who communicates clearly, treats them fairly, and interacts with them regularly to help ensure their success.”
