California employment law has unique requirements. We help you understand what matters for your business.
California is not a right-to-work state. Union-security clauses that require employees to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment are generally permitted under applicable federal law.
California is an at-will employment state. Even so, it has more wrongful-termination exceptions than most states, including the implied covenant of good faith, public policy exceptions, and implied contract claims. Employers should ensure every separation is carefully documented. G&A's HR professionals help ensure your policies and procedures follow best practices to minimize employment violations.
California, some municipalities and counties, and certain industries have their own minimum wage and overtime requirements that often differ from federal law. Employers must also comply with rules around rest and meal breaks and daily overtime laws. G&A’s payroll and compliance experts can help you navigate California’s wage requirements.
California has mandatory paid sick leave and paid family leave laws that require most employers to provide employees in the state with time off for approved purposes. A PEO is able to assist with policy development and tracking of paid sick time and help you navigate the contribution and benefits processes that paid family leaves require.
California requires employers to pay terminated employees immediately upon termination (if notice was given). Employees who resign without at least 72 hours' notice must also be paid within 72 hours of their termination. Failing to meet these deadlines can result in waiting-time penalties. G&A’s payroll specialists help manage California’s final pay requirements.
All California employers are required to carry workers' compensation insurance. G&A can help ensure you have proper coverage and handle claims administration.
California operates under Cal/OSHA, an OSHA-approved state plan that covers most private sector workers and all state and local government employees. Cal/OSHA sets standards that often exceed federal requirements. G&A’s safety experts provide guidance and risk management to help you meet Cal/OSHA requirements.
California employers with 15 or more employees must include pay scales in job postings. The state also requires disclosure upon employee request. G&A’s HR experts can help ensure your job postings are compliant with state-specific requirements.
Stay compliant with confidence — partner with a California PEO that knows state rules inside and out.
